They are not, then, collections of letters and numbers easily converted to other programs that deal more elegantly with text and data. By design, PDF files are graphic, visual documents meant to be viewed as a set of pixels organized in relationship to each other. The nature of the PDF file format, however, makes this problematic. Powerful tools are destined to collaborate. It is no wonder, then, that every now and then the need to convert information stored in a PDF into an Excel worksheet comes up.
